Every town has a few places where the noise drops away: a bench behind the library, a back room in a café, a stretch of river nobody mentions. They are rarely on a map, and the people who love them tend to keep them that way.
This is a story about three of them, and about the people who look after them without being asked. It begins, as most good stories do, with a small mistake and a long walk home.

“A quiet place is not an empty one. It is a place where somebody has decided what not to add.”
By the time we reached the water, the light had gone amber and the conversation had slowed to match it. Nobody wanted to be the first to leave, and nobody said so.
