What a website costs, and why

Website quotes can look far apart for the same business. Usually the difference is in what is included. This guide explains what moves the cost up or down so you can compare quotes fairly. It names no prices. Ours are on Pricing.
Pages
Every page has to be designed, written, checked on a phone and tested. A simple site with a few pages takes less work than one with a page for every service, and the cost follows the work.
Features
A page that explains who you are is simple. A page that takes bookings, sells products, accepts payments or sends customers a confirmation is a small piece of software, and it needs building and testing. Each feature you add is a decision worth making on purpose.
Content
Words and photos take time. If you bring them, the project goes faster. If someone else writes or photographs for you, that is extra work. A second language, such as Spanish, means the whole site is written and checked twice.
Design
A design made around your business takes more effort than a template with your name dropped in. Seeing and approving the design before launch is worth asking about, whatever you choose.
Changes and revisions
Most projects include a set number of review rounds. Changes beyond that, or a change of direction midway, are extra work. A good quote says how many rounds are included and how later changes are priced.
Ongoing care
A website is not finished at launch. The domain renews every year, the site needs a place to live online, and software and security need attention over time. Ask what happens after launch, what that costs, and whether you can take everything over yourself.
Questions to ask any studio
- What exactly is included, page by page and feature by feature?
- Who owns the domain and the finished site?
- How many rounds of changes are included, and what do extra changes cost?
- What does it cost to keep the site running after launch?
- Will we see the design before we commit to launching?
